Annual Scholarship Auction:

Friday, November 5th, 2010 at the Holiday Inn, downtown Rock Island.

The scholarships we award annually to local/regional male and female students pursuing an education in a construction-related field are made possible through funds raised at our Scholarship Auction.  All items presented for auction are donated by local businesses, associations, groups, clubs and individuals who share in the NAWIC commitment to facilitate the education of our area youth, particularly those who are the future of the construction industry.  The Scholarship Auction is held annually in November, and is well attended by members’ companies, their clients, and other supporters of NAWIC and the construction industry in general.  The auction is open to the public, so please consider attending!  Watch the events calendar for details and a registration form.  To donate an item, service, or to help sponsor an item for the auction, please e-mail us at info@nawicqc.com.

Garden Shed Building Project:

This fun project is targeted to middle school aged children and makes THEM a “design-build” contractor!  Kids team up to form a company who then work together to budget for, design, and then construct (using arts & crafts supplies, which are provided) a 120 – 180 square foot garden shed.  Minimum building requirements have to be incorporated, and each company’s imaginary budget is $18,000. Our chapter is in the process of organizing this event

Block-Kids Building Program:

The Block-Kids Building Program is a national building program competition that is co-sponsored locally by Chapter #50 and the Bettendorf Family Museum.  This popular program introduces children to the construction industry in an effort to create an awareness of and to promote an interest in future careers in one of the many facets of the industry.  Participants receive 100 plastic, interlocking building blocks, a piece of string and a piece of aluminum foil to create a building project in 45 minutes. They are encouraged to look for creative solutions to construction challenges.  The entrants will be judged by members of the Quad Cities building community, and prizes are awarded to the top three entrants. The project chosen by the judges as the most noteworthy will be entered in a regional contest.  Winners at the regional level will then be entered in a national contest.  The program is open to all elementary school children in grades 1-6.  Pre-registration is strongly recommended but if there are openings or cancellations registrations will be taken the morning of the event. Registration forms will be posted here on the website, or available at the Museum.  There is no fee to register.

This event is typically held in February each year.  Check back here for a registration form later this year.

Habitat for Humanity:

Each spring or summer, we coordinate a date for members from our chapter to volunteer at a local Habitat build.  This has proven to be a fun and rewarding way to help our community, and perhaps learn a new technique or skill!

Lorraine D. Wright Construction Awards:

Our chapter hosts this event in August of odd-numbered years.  Local construction projects completed in the previous two years are self-nominated

An unbiased panel of judges select projects deserving of Awards of Merit & Excellence in each of several industry categories.  Recipients include the owner, general contractor, subcontractors, architect, engineers, and suppliers who participated in the project.  The awards ceremony is preceeded by a special dinner and social/networking gathering of individuals representing all aspects of the Quad City construction industry.

Construction Appreciation Night:

Our members host this event in August or September to recognize our employers for their gracious support throughout the year. THANK YOU TO ALL OUR EMPLOYERS FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF NAWIC CHAPTER 50.
